Big names and debutants vie for 2010 Orange Confederations Cup
02-09-2010

The Orange Confederations Cup has since its creation in 2004 brought out the best from traditional teams such as Hearts of Oak Accra, FAR Rabat, Etoile Sahel of Sousse and Club Sportif Sfaxien. Last year’s winners did not even feature in the list of favourites but Stade Malien of Bamako brave the odds and won the finals of the continental competition after close to forty five years.
Its success has made other teams hitherto considered outsiders to begin staking a claim for the title. The preliminary rounds of the competition will however give us a clue as to which teams might be aiming for glory during the closing stages of the competition.

The year a record 52 teams shall be taking part in the competition, twelve of which will only enter during the 16 final rounds due to their previous performances in the competition. On the side of the proud and famous will be some teams which have yet to establish a name in any of the continental competitions.
Among them will be Warri Wolves (Nigeria), Petrojet (Egypt), FC Amal (Sudan), Uniao Flamengo Santos (Botswana), Baraka FC (Guinea), Central Parade (Sle), Lenghtens (Zimbabwe) and Séwé Sport (Ivory Coast).
Will these new comers have what it takes to rival the best? That is the question being asked by many a football observer. Their capacity to overcome adversity will depend on their level of preparedness.
Such teams will be contesting the trophy alongside previous winners like Etoile Sahel and CS Sfaxien, Nigerian giant Enyimba which won the African Champions League in 2003 and 2004, AS V. Club of Kinshasa, Daring Club Motema Pembe, FAR de Rabat, Coton Sport of Garoua and Primeiro of Agosto that will be striving to carry on from the enthusiasm of the just ended African Nations Cup, as well as defending champions Stade Malien.
From the look of things one can easily say that the Orange Confederations Cup will be of a very high level this year like it has been in the past.
