CAF Delegation for the Orange AFCON South Africa 2013 Completes Inspection Visit

A High level delegation led by the CAF 1st Vice President, Mr. Patel, the Secretary General, Mr. Hicham el Amrani, and the CEO of the Local Organising Committee, Mr. Mvuzo Mbebe, the  LOC Tournament Director Russell Paul, and CAF Event Director Shereen Arafa  visited the 5 host cities to select the appropriate facilities and determine cities' readiness and preparations for the Orange AFCON 2013 in South Africa.

The host cities visits and site selection , which began 3 Till  8 July, focused on facilities such as training grounds, team hotels, CAF officials accommodation and stadium facilities.  

The visits by the CAF delegation also coincided with the Preliminary Draw which took place on 5 July, which was attended by the Hon. Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr. Fikile Mbalula, the 1st Vice President of CAF,  Suketu Patel; Secretary General of CAF,  Hicham El Amrani, Sporting Fraternity, the Chairperson of the   Board Of the Local  Organizing Committee, Adv. Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana and the CEO Mvuzo Mbebe, as well as Members of the Participating Associations.

During his speech at the Preliminary Draw, Mr. S Patel expressed his full confidence in the facilities and infrastructure that South Africa has to host the Tournament because of the legacy  infrastructure from the World Cup in 2010 and  CAF is spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting facilities and the country's capability to host global events.

The stadiums visited were Soccer City (Johannesburg), Mbombela (Nelspruit), Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace (Rustenberg), Moses Mabhida (Durban), and Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth).

Opening and Closing,  and Group matches have been decided as per the following:

Opening and Closing: Johannesburg
Group A: Durban
Group B: Port Elizabeth
Group C: Nelspruit
Group D: Rustenburg

At the conclusion of the visit CAF also confirmed 3 of the 4 social issues  that will be supported during the Tournament which are (i) malaria, (ii), peace, and (iii) education as well as the partners that have been endorsed by CAF to execute these issues, viz. United Against Malaria, African Union, and 1Goal, respectively.

The closing meeting between  LOC and CAF reached common consensus on important matters such as ticketing, public awareness, social causes, media accreditation, calendar for the Tournament, TV production, marketing and branding, sponsorship,  hospitality, merchandising, Mascott, accommodation, protocol, transport, publications, as well as financial matters.
