NEWSFlavio brace powers Ahly to Super Cup triumph 02-06-2009
A second half brace half from Angolan-import, Flavio Amado ensured Al-Ahly of Egypt claimed a record fourth CAF Super Cup title after a 2-1 win over Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien on Friday at the Cairo International Stadium. Ahly, without influential attacking midfielder and contender for the CAF Player of the Year award, Mohamed Aboutreika due to concerns about his fitness, survived the threat of their Tunisian counterparts to claim a feat that confirms them as the best club on the continent. The clash is a repeat of the CAF-MTN Champions League final in 2005, which the Egyptians won by the same margin saw Ahly take the lead through Flavio, who headed home from close range from compatriot Sebastiao Gilberto’s cross two minutes into the second session after a closely contested first half. Sfaxien, winners of the Confederation Cup leveled-up six minutes later through Ivorian-import Blaise Kouassi. In the 70th minute, Flavio nicknamed “headmaster” by a section of Ahly fans grabbed the match winner by finishing off a cross from Gilberto again in a half largely dominated by the Red Devils. The loss was the second in succession for CS Sfaxien, after losing by a similar margin to fellows Etoile du Sahel last year in Sousse. Ahly had previously won the annual one-off game that pits the CAF-MTN Champions League winners against the Confederation Cup holders thrice in 2001, 2005 and 2006. |
