Kenya’s Harambee Stars cruised into the 2014 World Cup qualification campaign after demolishing visiting Seychelles 4-0 in the return leg tie staged at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
Harambee Stars have now sailed to the group stage which starts in March next year ahead of the world’s biggest football extravaganza, which will be staged in Brazil in 2014.
Kenya coach Francis Kimanzi praised his charges for accomplishing the task. “We started well by beating them (Seychelles) away and it was a formality that we qualify at home. I ‘am very impressed by my players and the huge task now begins as we strive to reach the finals in Brazil,” said Kimanzi.
Seychelles coach Jean-Louis Ralphs heaped praise on Kenya for booking the ticket in the group stage. “I must congratulate Kenya for the superb performance. We were beaten fairly and squarely. Kenya were good in both speed and ball control. Kenya was the better side in this two-legged tie and I wish them well in the qualifiers,” Ralphs told cafonline.com.
The Kenyans won the first leg 3-0 in Mahe, Seychelles last Friday. But with the resounding victory, Kenya coach Kimanzi will now be focusing on the group stages where Kenya – have been grouped along Nigeria, Malawi and Namibia.
Harambee Stars led 3-0 before halftime with goals from Brian Mandela (16th minute), Dennis Oliech (36th min), Titus Mulama (46th min) and Victor Mugubi, younger brother to Real Sociedad midfielder MacDonald Mariga in the 74th minute. The Kenyans had started strongly with striker Oliech missing a sitter after spadework from Mulama in the 12th minute.
Then Mandela put the hosts ahead in the 16th minute after rising high to head home a corner kick from Mulama. The goal somehow galvanized the Kenyans with Mulama, once again watching helplessly as his shot went hide.
Then skipper Oliech, who scored a double in the first leg match, added the second goal after weaving past Seychelles’s rearguard to beat goalkeeper Euphrasie Vincent all the way. Then Mulama, inscribed his name in the score sheet after he tapped home a cross from Mathare United midfielder Kevin Kimani.
Kenya led 3-0 at the half-time break and looked even dangerous on resumption as they pressed on for more goals.
Seychelles sensing danger made a double change bringing in Rose Ricky and Maria Damican for Besty Kevin and Annacoura Don. The move somehow paid dividends as Ricky tested Kenya custodian Arnold Origi with a low footed shot.
But before Seychelles could settle, Kenya continued to raid their rearguard with Oliech beating keeper Vincent but the goal was cleared off the line by defender Dorby Brian.
Kenya then made quick substitutions with Mulama and Oliech coming off with Bob Mugalia and Collins Okoth as replacements. Mugalia kept Seychelles defence on toes with ball dribbling and it was no surprise when Mugabe thundered home the fourth goal after weaving past the entire defence to slot home past Vincent.
