A first half goal from veteran Getaneh Kebede was enough for Ethiopia to beat Sierra Leone 1-0 at Hawassa International Stadium in Group F encounter.

The homers came to this game having lost 5-0 to Ghana whilst Sierra Leone were on the back of a 2-1 win over Kenya at home. It was the Walias that piled on early pressure through the right flank. Shemeles Bekele’s through ball found Omod Okuri but the forward could only hit the side netting seven minutes into the game.

The Leone Stars were defending their lines instead opting for long balls. Meanwhile, the home side took control of the midfield. Kei Kamara tested Ethiopian goalie Samson Assefa in the 24th minute for the visitors’ first meaningful attempt on goal. However, the Walias remained the dominant force in the opening half and were awarded a penalty following Yeami Dunia’s foul on Ahmed Reshide. Forward Kebede made no mistake by converting the spot kick to give Ethiopia the lead in the 35th minute.

Upon resumption of the second half, the Leone Stars looked determined to get the leveller as they pushed forward more frequently than they did in the first 45 minutes. The Walias opted to hold onto the ball and hit the opposition on the break. The visitors twice came very close to grab the equalizer through substitute John Kamara. Kamara found himself unmarked in a goalmouth scramble and unleashed a shot but to his dismay teammate Alhassan Kamara deflected the ball out in the 67th minute. Three minutes later, Kamara headed wide a great delivery from a corner kick.

The introduction of Abel Yalew totally rejuvenated the Ethiopians as they gained momentum to double their advantage. A blunder from Sierra Leone centre back David Simbo gifted Kebede the time and space to get his second of the day; nevertheless his strike was denied by keeper Solomon Morris before rattling the post. In the dying moments of the game Dawa Hotessa squandered a good scoring chance.

It is a debut win for newly appointed Ethiopia coach Abraham Mebratu. Ethiopia remains bottom of Group F while Sierra Leone occupies third. Ghana tops the group as Kenya is second. All the teams in Group F are tied at three points after two matches.

Reaction
Abraham Mebratu (Head Coach, Ethiopia)

My players tried to implement the game strategy that we had in mind. We were the better side. I am glad that the players were better than our opposition for the whole 90 minutes. However, we failed to convert the chances we had and we need to rectify those mistakes. This result will help us to gain our lost winning mentality and likewise be very competitive in the group. It is also a morale booster for the remaining qualifying games.

John Keister (Head Coach Sierra Leone)
We just have to go back and work very hard. They (Ethiopia) played at home so they did okay. It is a process for us. We will go home to regroup. We got Ghana and we will work around that. I don’t think the bigger and experienced players performed at all. For me that is my disappointment.
