Tanzania’s Simba was unstoppable as they beat Gendarmerie from Djibouti 4-0 in a preliminary round first leg clash on Sunday in Dar es Salam.
A brace from captain John Bocco and one each from Saidi Juma and Emmanuel Okwi was enough to seal victory for the homers.
The visitors was hit by surprise as Juma scored the opener in the first minute from a superb free-kick that left Gerdarmerie goalkeeper, Bilal Ahmed, with nothing to do.
Simba dominated possession and made four attempts in the first 30 minutes through Bocco, Okwi, Juma and Shiza Kichuya but all ended in vain.
Bocco added the tally for the hosts in the 33 minutes with a header before netting the third on the stroke of half time, finishing off Okwi’s cross from the left.
Gendarmerie improved their play in the second half trying to find an away goal but Simba goalkeeper Aishi Manula saved Idriss Yebah’s in the opening minutes.
Simba made three attempts through Shomary Kapombe and Bocco, before Okwi completed the rout with the fourth goal in stoppage time.
The return leg is set for Wednesday, 21 February 2018 in Djibouti.
John Bocco (Captain, Simba)
This victory is good basis to progress to the next round, though we still have some work to do. Four goals look big but still we have another 90 minutes to fight. The good thing for us is that we have a good team and good spirit. We will fight to win the return leg.
Andre Rene Yebga (Captain, Gendarmerie)
Simba were good. The weather was hot here; it could have been better if we played at night. It is hot in Djibouti but we used to play at night when it is cool. I can also say our marking was poor that why we conceded three goals in the first half. We haven’t lost faith, this is football and everything is possible, we can score five goals at home and advance to another round.
