Dimgba: Enyimba plays better away from home

Dimgba: Enyimba plays better away from home
15 May 2018 07:08

Nigeria torch bearers, Enyimba will on Wednesday face Congolese side Club Athletique Renaissance Aiglons (CARA) at Stade Alphonse Massamba Debat away in Brazzaville.

Enyimba forward Augustine Dimgba believes the match offers the West Africans an opportunity to consolidate their position on the top of Group C after a 2-0 home win over Djoliba AC of Mali last week.

Incidentally, Dimgba who scored Enyimba's second goal against Djoliba in Calabar is the club's leading scorer this season with just five goals in all competitions and feels he can get among the goals yet again in Brazzaville.

Below are excerpts from the interview with CAFOnline.com;

Cafonline.com: How much confidence are you taking into this match against CARA?

Augustine Dimgba: Honestly, we are very confident travelling to Congo. We are the only Nigerian team left in the continental club competition and as a result we have to do very well. It’s been so far so good for us on the continent with all the matches played. I believe we can still record victory in Congo if we continue to work together as a team.

You are Enyimba's top scorer with just five goals in all competitions so far this season, have you guys missed your injured top striker Mfom Udoh?

We have really struggled scoring goals this season and I believe we would probably have scored more goals if Mfom Udoh was in the team because he has goal sense. Though we often create quite a number during matches, we have problems putting them into the net.

What can the fans expect from you and the team against CARA on Wednesday?

We always play to win and like I said earlier, we are confident we can win in Congo. Personally, I've told myself that I have to brace up and improve on my goal-scoring ability both in the Total CAF Confederation Cup and in the Nigerian League. I will continue to work hard and hopefully I can also get a goal against CARA in Congo.

Don't you think CARA would be difficult to beat at home since they lost to Williamsville Athletic Club of Cote d'Ivoire on Match Day 1?

We know they would come at us but we shall be ready for them too. I believe we have a solid team that can withstand pressure anytime, any day. We survived against Bidvest in Johannesburg despite all the pressure they mounted. I don't think CARA can give us as much pressure. Whatever the situation, we shall be ready because it's a game of 11 against 11.

Why are you so confident despite the fact that this is an away game for Enyimba?

We play better in away matches both in the Nigerian league and on the continent; we defeated Energie in Cotonou and we were forced to a draw by Bidvest in Johannesburg and that shows the capacity of our team.

Enyimba is the only Nigerian club left in the continental cups this year, is this not an added pressure on you guys?

I would rather say it's a plus for us; though we have won the CAF Champions League twice in the past, Enyimba has not won the CAF Confederation Cup.  Most of us here now were not even part of the team won the Champions League, so we want to be the first set of players to win the Confederation Cup for Enyimba; we want to write our own history.
