Aigle Noir have been crowned champions for the first time in the Burundi elite division ‘Primus League’ (first division) for the 2018/19 season with four matches to spare.

Nicknamed ‘The Fighters’ based in the southern province of Makamba were decorated on Wednesday (6 March 2019), amidst fanfare despite a 3-2 loss to Olympic Star in a Week 26 clash. Aigle Noir were certain of the title after a 1-1 between Musongati and Flambeau du Centre in a central derby.

Aigle Noir are 13 points richer than closest contender Musongati, and the outcome of the remaining four games will make no impact at the summit of the standings. They have 61 points from 26 games.

Head Coach of the Fighters Joslin Bipfubusa was full of praise for his players for the work put into their title bid. He is also banking on a double with the President’s Cup their next target, now at the quarters stage.

“It was a tough league and we are excited to be crowned champions ahead of schedule. It was a collective effort by the playing body, technical team and the fans,” an elated Akanakimana Bienvenu disclosed.

By the feat, Aigle Noir will represent Burundi in the 2019/20 Total CAF Champions League.
