The 2018 Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) U-17 Championship to be staged in Burundi flags off on Saturday April 14 with the hosts taking on Kenya in a highly anticipated tourney opener as well as Group ‘A’ fixture starter.
CECAFA General Secretary, Nicholas Musonye, confirms that a total of eight member associations including Tanzania, Kenya Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and Zanzibar are to take part. Rwanda, South Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti are not participating due to varying reasons.
This is the third edition of this regional tournament and the second time in Burundi, after the inaugural one which they won in 2007. The other edition was played in Sudan in 2009 with Uganda emerging champions.
Musonye has commended CAF and FIFA for the support towards making the regional cadet championship a reality after an eight-year hiatus.
“It wouldn’t have been possible again without FIFA and CAF support and I commend them for the dedicated services towards development programs”, Musonye said.
“We now have an assurance to hold this tournament annually with such assistance to be extended to us from our mother bodies”.
Group A comprises host Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia, and will be based in Ngozi about 120-kilometres north of the capital, Bujumbura. However, the opening matches will take place at the Omuco stadium in Muyinga Province. They will later return to the Urukundo Stadium for the remaining games.
Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Sudan constitute Group B and will be based in Muyinga.
The semifinal matches are slated to be played in Gitega Province, Central of Burundi, with the final in Ngozi on Sunday, 29 April 2018.
