Egyptian giants Zamalek will try to get back on the track when they play hosts to North African rivals Nasr Hussein Dey of Algeria on Wednesday in Alexandria, as Group D enters Day 2.

The White Knights, favoured to finish as group winners received a massive shock when they were on the losing side to Kenya’s Gor Mahia 4-2 in Nairobi last week. Despite taking an early lead, and finishing the first half tied 2-2, Zamalek conceded two second half goals to return to their Cairo base empty.

“We deserved to lose”, Zamalek’s coach Christian Gross admitted after the Nairobi game. “Despite scoring early, we lost discipline in all areas. We conceded four goals from some needless defensive mistakes”, added the Swiss coach.

Zamalek is having a good domestic season, leading the 18-club Egyptian Premier League pack, and are desperate to replicate that on the continental scene.

“I won’t blame any players for the defeat (against Gor Mahia). We win as a team, we lose as a team. Having to play too many games in a short time forces me to rest some key players sometimes,”, added Gross.

Zamalek will have back to back home games against Hussein Dey, then Angola’s Petro Atletico, and Gross sees this as a good chance to retrieve the expected top spot.

“We need ten (10) points to guarantee our place in the quarter finals. There are still five games to be played, starting this Wednesday and our focus is just to win every game”, he concluded.

Nasr Hussein Dey share top spot with Gor Mahia, having won their opening game at home 2-1 against Petro Atletico. The top two sides qualify to the knockout stages of the continent’s second tier club competition.

Meanwhile Petro will play hosts to hosts to Gor Mahia in an earlier kickoff, also on Wednesday in Luanda.
