Over 20,000 fans were left dejected after hosts Sudan bowed out of the 2016 Olympic Games qualifiers following a 2-0 loss to Tunisia on Sunday at the El Abyad Stadium in El Abyad, located in Western Sudan.

Esperance midfielder Ghaylen Chaaleli opened the scores on 23 minutes and Yassine Meryeh added the second on 66 minutes to ensure the Carthage Eagles’ a smooth passage into the third round 3-0 on aggregate.

Whilst Tunisia remain on course for a fifth appearance at the quadrennial multisport event after 1960 (Rome), 1988 (Seoul), 1996 (Atlanta) and 2004 (Athens); the Sudanese will have to wait one more time to make yet another showing following their only outing at the 1972 edition in Munich.

After going down by an early goal, the Desert Hawks were gifted with an opportunity to restore parity just before the break, but Ahmad Nasr El Deen failed to convert from the spot.

To add to their woes, midfielder Ather El Tahir was sent off on 67 minutes, killing off any hopes of a comeback, whilst the visitors clung on to a resounding double.

For the over 20,000 fans, disappointment was written all over their faces moments after Egyptian referee Mohamed Abd El Moneim brought proceedings to an end, signaling the end of an era for the young players.

Meanwhile Tunisia will face northern rivals, Morocco at the next round.
