Senegal beat neighbours Gambia 1-0 on Saturday in Bakau to complete a double in the Sene-Gambian derby and advance to the first round of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Rwanda 2016 qualifiers.

The visitor’s silenced the home crowd after seven minutes when unmarked Stade de M’Bour forward Mouhamad Waliou Ndoye’s header beats Scorpions captain and goalie Christopher Allen in goal from a well crafted set piece.

The visiting Teranga Lions came close to increasing their lead twice in the space of two minutes when star-man Abdoulaye Ba danced his way through the opposing defence only to be denied by Allen and Boubacar Cissokho’s 20-yards screamer rattled the crossbar in the 15th and 17th minutes respectively.

Emil Sambou, one of seven changes in the Scorpions line-up saw his glancing header from Modou Jatta’s cross went wide to the frustration of the home fans that turn up in their large numbers at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

Real de Banjul’s Ablie Jallow was guilty of a missed opportunity in the 23-minute, powering his way through the well drilled Senegalese defence and opted to square a teammate when the goal was at his mercy four minutes later.

The hosts finished the first period well with good exchanges in the visitor’s halve. Jallow was again denied when he connected with Bully Drammeh’s looping cross from the right forcing Cheikh Thioub to make a routine save.

Gambia coach, Peter Bonu Johnson effected two changes at the break bringing on midfielder Lamin Charty of Hawks FC and left-fullback Saihou Conteh of promoted Steve Biko FC for Ebrima Jobe and Bakary Njie respectively, but failed to get the result which could have earned them a place in the next round qualifiers of the CHAN, a championship strictly designed for players plying their trade at home.

Allen saved what could have been the icing on the cake for the visitor’s, diving to his left to block Abdoulaye Ba who had dribbled past the defence and keep the score 1-0 in favour of the visitors, and 4-1 on aggregate.

Mustapha Seck’s charges will face the winner of Liberia – Guinea at the final round.
