Nigeria champions, Plateau United, on Sunday began their campaign with an impressive 3-0 home win against Eding Sport FC De La Lekie of Cameroon.

It was the club's first outing in the premier continental club championship at their new Jos

International Stadium and they did not disappoint their teeming fans by going into the lead through Elijah Ogene who followed up the rebound from Tosin Omoyele’s penalty in the 20th minute.

Sunday Inegbe nearly increased the tally in the 29th minute but his well-taken free kick was tipped away by Ntiana Lionel in goal for Eding Sport as they took the one-goal into the break.

Things did not change for most of the second stanza until Plateau turned on the blitz against the visiting team towards the end of the match. Ingbede finally got on the score sheet in the 86th minute while striker Joshua Obaje sealed victory off an inviting through pass by Raphael Ayagwa in the 90th minute.

Former Nigerian youth international Peter Suswam described Plateau’s victory as exciting, adding the club would leave no stone unturned to ensure qualification to the next round.

“The victory today against Eding Sport was good for us and that would give us much confidence going into the second leg,” he assured.

In the Total CAF Confederation Cup, Nigerian side, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) FC were forced to a 1-1 draw by AS Real away in Bamako.

The match played at Stade Modibo Keita on Sunday was MFM’s debut on the continent but they held their nerves after surviving early incursions by the home side. With barely a quarter of the hour played, striker Akinyemi Nojeem grabbed the curtain raiser but AS Real drew level two minutes later through a powerful header by Miakib Giscard.

“It was a good experience for us and we are happy with a good result away from home. We know they would come harder against us (in the return leg) but we are not going to relent,” stated striker Chukwuka Onuwa.

Nigeria’s other representative, Akwa United, were surprisingly beaten at home by visiting Hawks of Gambia at their Akwa Ibom International Stadium.

The Promise Keepers conceded the first goal against the run of play in the in the 11th minute when the visitors struck through Muhammed Jallow in their very first attempt at the homers goal area. Lanin Charity added the second goal with a powerful shot behind Akwa United’s goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke in the 35th minute.

In the second half, Akwa United still enjoyed much of the playing time but waited till the 71st minute when Victor Mbaoma scrambled home their only goal of the match.
