Medical facilities for the Total African Nations Championship Morocco have been lauded by experts, who have described it as up there with competitions such as the FIFA World Cup amongst others.

Each of the four venues – Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangiers and Agadir are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to handle all medical issues that will arise during the three-week long tournament.

As part of efforts towards an incident free tournament as far as the medical aspect is concerned, the CAF Medical Committee in collaboration with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) organised a one-day seminar in each of the four venues to discuss health matters related to the competition and how to handle such cases.

Casablanca which houses Group A had its turn on January 12, Tangiers (Group C) three days later, Marrakech (Group B) on January 16 with Agadir (Group D) rounding it up 24-hours later.

In attendance were the Medical Officers of the participating teams, Venue Medical Officers and Paramedics involved in the tournament.

CAF Medical Officer in charge of Marrakech, Dr Zakia Bartagi, said the seminar was to acquaint with medical operations on the ground, and as well exchange ideas and share knowledge with all stakeholders towards a successful tournament.

On his part, Dr Hicham Charrat, Venue Medical Officer for Marrakech said his team is ready for all emergency issues that will arise during the competition, just as his colleagues in the other venues.

“We have 10 ambulances on standby in each venue for players, officials, guests and spectators. On match days, we have 12 teams which consist of a respiratory nurse and paramedics for emergencies on the pitch, in and around the stadium. There is also an Automated External Defibrillator and Spine Boards on site. In addition, each team has a dedicated medical team stationed at their hotel,” Dr Charrat said.

Professor Efraim Kramer, Chief Medical Officer for the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 led discussions into topics such as Emergencies on the pitch, Concussions, Neck Injury, Spinal Injury and Sudden Cardiac Arrest in line with FIFA standards theoretically and practically.

“I have had the pleasure of inspecting the medical services in Marrakech at the stadium and what I have seen ranks amongst the best in the world without doubt. I commend the LOC for putting together a good medical cover which we can all be proud of,” Professor Kramer remarked.
