Hosts Namibia draw Nigeria in AWC draw

Hosts Namibia have been handed a tough draw for the 9th African Women’s Championship, drawing seasoned campaigners Nigeria.The Brave Gladiators are housed in Group A with six-time winners, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and debutants Zambia for the 11-25 October 2014 Championship.Group B has South Africa, Cameroon, Algeria and Ghana.The draw was held in the Namibian capital, Windhoek, on Saturday, 19 July 2014 at a ceremony graced by the crème de la crème of personalities from all sectors of the economy.Namibian Prime Minister, Dr. Hage Geingob, remarked that Namibia is proud to host the tournament whilst assuring of his Government’s support towards hosting a successful event.“Namibia is proud to stage the tournament and we are assured of hosting a tourney that will last in the minds of all, successful and enjoyable. Government is committed and will provide all the support to organize the championship”, the Prime Minister said.President of the CAF Organising Committee for Women’s Football, Dr Molefi Oliphant commended the Namibian Government and the Namibia Football Association for accepting the challenge to host the tournament.The draw was conducted by CAF Deputy General Secretary, Essam Ahmed, with assistance from Dr. Geingob and Julien Garises, one of the pioneers of women’s football in Namibia.
