In a packed year which has the Orange AFCON, African U-17 Championship, CAF U-20 Championship, Orange CHAN 2016 qualifiers and the CAF U-23 Championship, also on the calendar is the 11th edition of the All Africa Games.

The multi-sport event will mark its 50th anniversary with this year’s edition scheduled from 4-19 September in Congo. Incidentally, the maiden edition was also held in Congo in 1965.

This weekend the journey to final tournament starts with the first round matches of the qualifiers for both men and women.

Cameroon has been the most successful with four triumphs; 1991 (in Cairo), 1999 (in Johannesburg), 2003 (in Abuja) and 2007 (in Algiers). Egypt have won the ultimate twice; 1987 (Nairobi) and 1995 (Harare).

One-time winners include Congo (1965, Brazzaville), Nigeria (1973, Lagos), Algeria (1978, Algiers) and Ghana (2011, Maputo).

For this year, 22 countries will be involved in the qualifying phase. Notably missing is Algeria, who has withdrawn their participation. The qualifiers will be played in two rounds with Ghana, South Africa, Cameroon and Senegal exempted from the first round.
