Founded in the lead-up to 2010 World Cup South Africa, the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership’s United Against Malaria (UAM) campaign is an alliance of football teams and heroes, celebrities, health and advocacy organizations, governments and corporations who have united together against malaria. Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease yet still takes the life of a child every 60 seconds.
Using football as its foundation, UAM’s more than 200 partners from diverse sectors and continents invest their experience, time, funds, skills and enthusiasm because they share common goal: raising global awareness and galvanizing worldwide commitment to ending malaria deaths. The Confédération Africaine de Football joined the RBM Partnership by designating UAM an official social cause of its 2013, 2015 and 2017 Orange Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments and other select opportunities. During the 2013 AFCON, UAM and CAF partnered together to reach an estimated 1 billion people with life-saving messages about malaria prevention and treatment.
“The Confédération Africaine de Football is a valuable partner in the fight against malaria and has helped us reach countless communities across Africa with life-saving malaria messages that have the power to transform nations for generations to come,” said Mr. Hervé Verhoosel, head of external relations for the Roll Back Malaria Partnership. “The Roll Back Malaria Partnership and its United Against Malaria partners applaud CAF’s continued commitment to leverage its platform to help rid the African continent of this deadly yet preventable disease.”
