Globacom: Stimulating African development through football

Globacom Limited, reputed to be Africa’s fastest growing telecommunications service provider was founded by Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr, a Nigerian business entrepreneur with vast interests in Banking, Real Estate, Oil and Gas. Since its founding in 2003, Globacom has sought to stimulate the development of the African youth through football sponsorship, an investment that is the core of its corporate social responsibility service in all the markets where it operates and beyond.

With a vision to transform football in Africa to world class standards, Globacom has the title sponsorship rights to the Ghana Premier League and the annual African Football Awards. Globacom is also the Official Partner of the National teams of Ghana including the National Supporters Club of Nigeria and Ghana.

In 2005, Globacom and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) signed a partnership agreement for the sponsorship of the annual CAF Player of the Year Awards. The attendant glamour of the ceremonies organized by Globacom has since elevated the awards, hitherto a footnote in Africa’s football calendar, to a major event in the global football chart.

Globacom’s huge passion for the empowerment of the African youth is the chief driver of the depth of its commitment to the development of football at all levels on the continent. This has seen the young company supporting events such as the African Women Championship in 2006 and the FIFA U-17 World Cup Finals in 2009. Beyond football, the company has also lent its financial weight to the All Africa Games, the biggest multi-sport event on the continent. In supporting football, Globacom is providing a platform for African youths to find expression for their talent.

In the last five years of partnering with CAF to organize the GLO-CAF African Football Awards, Globacom has achieved its promise of raising the profile of African players through the staging of ceremonies that are rich in content and entertainment. Globacom is thus excited by the extension of the partnership for another five years (2010-2014) and is looking forward to adding fresh perspectives to the event.
