Rayon Sports were held to a goalless draw on Sunday afternoon by Nigeria’s Enyimba in their first leg of the Total CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals at the Kigali Stadium in Nyamirambo.
This now marks that Rayon Sports have to win or draw of goals away from home in the return leg which will be played on September, 23.
The 'Blues' outfit were far from their normal selves with the five clear cut opportunities coming from Kevin Muhire, Djabel Manishimwe, Bonfils Caleb Bimenyimana and Eric Rutanga who failed to beat goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai.
Rayon dominated the half time which ended in a 0-0 draw with good display from Djabel Imanishimwe, Prosper Dunk, Muhire Kevin and skipper Abdul Rwatubyaye. Rayon had another four attempts in the second half while three to Enyimba FC.
However, Eric Rutanga from Rayon Sports received a yellow card and he will miss the return leg which means that Coach Roberto Oliveira Goncalves de Calmo will use Eric Gisa Irambona as left back.
Apart from three attempts, Enyimba looked very nervous when in possession of the ball and there were a lot of misplaced passes at the middle of the park.
With Caleb Bimenyimana leading the striking line, Rayon offered good chance of scoring but not it looked that they will need to work hard if they want to go forward and there is a lot work to than needs to be done in order to progress in the semi-finals.
Rayon Sports had many chances to score goals in each half but denied by man of the match goalie Afelokhai.
In first half Kevin Muhire and Caleb Bimenyimana missed two clear chances while Enyimba striker Ibrahim Mustapha had three chances but saved by goalie Abouba Bashunga while other saved by Abdul Rwatubyaye.
Enyimba had good chance to lead the game but Sunday Damilare Adetunji failed to hit the target in the 20th minute. Three minutes later, Kevin Muhire had chance to open the scoring line for Rayon Sports but his shot went wide.
In the 28th minute Caleb Bimenyimana had good opportunity but his head was saved by goalie Afelokhai. Enyimba played with counterattacks but Rayon are playing with small passes to penetrate in the defense of Enyimba but failed to score.
In second half, Enyimba striker, Ibrahim Mustafa had two opportunities to scored but saved by Abouba Bashunga while Prosper Dunk had chance to score for Rayon Sports but his effort was saved by goalie Theophilus Afelokhai.
Forward, Joseph Osadiaye had another chance but was denied by Bashunga. In second half Rayon Sports coach made changes to bring forward Gilbert Mugisha to Saddam Nyandwi while Christ Mbondi came to Prosper Dunk and brought the hard time to the defense of Enyimba but failed to give something to smile to the ‘blues’ fans.
Enyimba coach, Usman Abdallah brought Freedom Omofoman to Wasiu Alalade and Bashir Abdulrahaman to Joseph Osadiaye.
Ibrahim Mustafa was booked for the visitors, however, Theophilus Afelokhai made a super save in the last minute to give the chance the visitors the draw away from home. Rayon Sports will now switch their attention to second leg.
Rayon Sports missed two of their key players such as Yannick Mukunzi and Thierry Manzi who were suspended. Meanwhile CARA Brazzaville lost at home against Raja Casablanca 1-2
Rayon Sports advanced to quarter-finals, along with USM Alger, as first runners-up from Group D a fortnight ago – outclassing Kenyan champions Gor Mahia and Tanzania’s Young Africans.
