Burkina Faso through after six-goal Sousse thriller

Burkina Faso through after six-goal Sousse thriller
21 May 2018 11:28

Visiting Burkina Faso held Libya to a thrilling 3-3 draw in their second round second leg on Sunday in Sousse (Tunisia) to book their spot at the final round of the qualifiers.

‘Les Etalons Juniors’ went through 6-4 on aggregate and will face Gabon at the last hurdle.

Libya, playing away from home due to the political instability back home, needed a 2-0 win to oust the West Africans and they shot into the lead on 23 minutes through striker Jihad Shaldun after a promising start. The lead lasted for six minutes and Djibril Ouattara levelled from the spot after Abdoul Fessal Tapsoba was fouled by Libya defender Salah Fakroun.

Abdoul Abbase Ripama scored on 43 minutes, to ensure the visitors went into the break with a narrow lead.

The determination of the Libyans in the second half yielded dividends on the hour mark, and Elmahdi Elkout drew even from a penalty.

On 62 minutes, Kalifa Nikiema restored the Burkinabes’ lead with a spectacular free-kick but Shaldun was not done as he struck the equalizer two minutes later to earn his side a deserving draw.

Burkina Faso will face Gabon in July for a place at the final tournament scheduled for 2-15 February 2019 in Niger.

Reactions
Seraphin Dargani (Head Coach, Burkina Faso)
It was a very interesting game with plenty of goals, beautiful ball play and many opportunities that ended in goals. We qualified with a 3-3 score but we could have scored more. We had three or four other opportunities we failed to convert. We have qualified and we will work on improving for the upcoming matches.

Ayadh Gadhi (Head Coach, Libya)
We lost the tie after first leg in Burkina Faso. Today's game was very intense and there were many beautiful goals scored. We played offensively and tried to wrap up the game from the beginning but the defensive mistakes were costly. The penalty they scored frustrated us but we thank God for the good performance we gave.
