Rwanda reached the last four of the CECAFA U-17 Zonal qualifiers after beating Burundi 4-3 on Monday in Dar es Salaam.

The win takes the Rwandese to the summit of the Group A standings after beating Sudan in the tournament opener at the weekend.

Moise Nyarugabo opened the scores for Rwanda after 22 minutes before a solo effort by Arsene Irakunda saw Burundi draw level.

Midfielder Rodrigue Isingizwe and Keddy Nsanzimfura scored just before recess to give Rwanda a 3-1 lead at the interval. Isingizwe punished the Burundian backline with the second goal on 42 minutes before Nsanzimfura struck from a free-kick a minute later.

Munaba Edson reduced the deficit for Burundi on 57 minutes after a spirited start to the second half. However, their efforts were dealt a major blow when Nyarugabo scored the fourth goal for the Junior Wasps on 62 minutes to seal victory.

On 70 minures, Flavier Iratanga gave Burundi a glimmer of hope to make it 4-3. Eight minutes later, Rwanda’s Jean Rene Ishimwe was giving the marching off orders for a second yellow card but the Junior Wasps held on to claim victory.

Host Tanzania and Sudan square off in the ultimate Group A clash on Thursday.
