Holders Ghana were held to barren draw by Senegal in the Group B opener of the 11th African Games Brazzaville 2015 on Sunday at the Alphonse Massamba Debat Stadium in the Congolese capital.

Senegal, due to host the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in November displayed a good outing to split points with the Ghanaians in the group reduced to three teams following the withdrawal of Egypt.

The Senegalese dominated with better scoring chances but failed to convert them into goals. The inefficiency of ‘Les Lionceaux’ at the Ghana rear is one that they will live to regret. After settling early in the game, midfielder Slyvain Badji was denied by Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori on 20 minutes.

Ghana’s Black Meteors ended the first half on a satisfactory note and were unlucky to break the deadlock just before half time after took on the Senegalese defence, but his final touch was no trouble for Senegal goalie Pape Ndiaye.

The Meteors resumed stronger with Richard Gandze making a threat at breaking the deadlock in the opening minutes of the second half. The remainder of the game remained balance with the pendulum swinging from one to the other until proceedings was brought to an end.

Reactions

Saliou Dia (Head Coach, Senegal)

There is only one player in my team who has an experience at this level. We are a growing team. Our goal is to prepare for the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations that we will host in November. We created many chances. I believe with a bit of precision, we could have put them down and win the game.

Malik Jabir (Head Coach, Ghana)

Senegal is a good team. As coach, it is a long time since I saw them play. It was a discovery for me. I tried to learn more but this was not possible. I hope we will do better against Nigeria in our next game.
