Facing a huge possibility of watching yet another FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup from home, the South African U20 Women’s National team have a mammoth task of reversing a 2-0 defeat suffered at the hands of Burundi a fort night ago at the Prince Louise Rwagasore Stadium in Burundi as they prepare to host the East Africans at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Saturday.

The high-riding Basetsana were brought down to earth after coming into the clash as favourites following their 9-0 aggregate win over Namibia in the first round of qualifiers but two first half goals at a packed Prince Louise Rwagasore Stadium saw the Swallows register an unprecedented win over South Africa.

Both sides are yet to feature in the women’s world showpiece set to take place in France next year and will be hoping to rewrite the history books of their respective nations.

For South Africa, the return of key players from school exams will be a huge plus for Basetsana coach, Maud Khumalo.

Khumalo had six debutants in the fixture against the Swallows which showed in how her side battled to string passes together as in previous fixtures.

“It is good to have some of our key players back however that does not guarantee us a result. We need to score three goals against a team that is very well organised but in football nothing is impossible and we need to fight until the referee’s final whistle” said Khumalo.

The former senior national team player’s biggest worry will be breaking the stubborn defense of the East Africans who showed composure in frustrating the South Africans.

Khumalo will be banking on the experience of midfielder, Gabriela Salgado who will be making her 27th appearance for the national team with 18 goals to her name.

The speedy winger is up to the task and says the team is raring to go and with the support of the home crowd, a good result is very much possible.

“We know what is required from us and this will need us to be very clinical in front of goal. We need to take our chances and ensure that we don’t allow them to play because that is how they hurt us last time. Scoring three goals with no response from them won’t be easy but we need to give it our all” said Salgado.
