Simba beat rivals Young Africans 5-4 on penalties on Wednesday (23 August 2017) in Dar es Salaam to win the 2017 Tanzania Community Shield.

After barren draw in regulation time, Simba edged their bitterest rivals in the curtain raiser to the new football season after converting five of their kicks against four by Yanga.

The one-off match pitted the league champions of the previous season, Yanga against the knockout winners, Simba.

Forward Mohammed Ibrahim was Simba’s hero, converting the decisive kick. On the otherhand, Yanga saw two of their penalties wasted by Kelvin Yondani and Juma Mahadhi whilst Simba’s Mohammed Hussein was denied by Yanga shot-stopper, Youthe Rostand.

“We played well in regulation time. We had good possession and our buildups were swift. Though we lost to penalties, we were the best side on the pitch,” said Yanga captain, Nadir Haroub.

On his part, Simba head coach, Joseph Omog said “I am happy that we won on penalties. Our attackers were not as lethal as were supposed to be. We created plenty of chances but they couldn’t convert them to goals”.

Meanwhile, the 2017/2018 Tanzania is expected to kickoff at the weekend.
