SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations [KM1]leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information. FAO helps developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all. Since its founding in 1945, the Organization has focused special attention on developing rural areas, home to 70 percent of the world\'s poor and hungry people. Ensuring that every girl, boy, woman and man enjoy adequate food on a permanent basis is not only a moral imperative and an investment with high economic returns: it is the realization of a fundamental human right. At the World Food Summit held in Rome in 1996 and again at the World Food Summit: five years later in 2002, leaders vowed to reduce that number by half by 2015. Moreover, the United Nations Millennium Development Goals commit world leaders to reducing by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger, while ensuring environmental sustainability The TeleFood Programme [KM2]was launched in the aftermath of the World Food Summit which recognized that freeing millions of people from lives of poverty and malnutrition was too great a task for governments alone. In conformity with the Conference Resolution 3/97, FAO launched in 1997 the TeleFood Programme with the principal purpose of increasing public awareness about hunger and the need for action. By financing grassroot-level community projects the TeleFood Special Fund helps families and small-scale farmers communities produce more food and generate cash income, for better access to food. Today, the concrete results of TeleFood can be seen in over 2900 projects[KM3] in 130 countries. Her Excellency Suzanne Mubarak, First Lady of the Arab Republic of Egypt, was nominated as Raeia (Illustrious Guide) of FAO on 16 October 2008, in the light of her active involvement in the daily struggle for a decent life of those who are disadvantaged, hungry and suffering.
