Far from decreasing, the number of hungry people in the world is currently increasing. With an estimated increase of 105 million hungry people in 2009, there are now 1.02 billion malnourished people in the world, meaning that almost one sixth of all humanity is suffering from hunger. The most recent increase in hunger is not the consequence of poor global harvests but is caused by the world economic crisis that has resulted in lower incomes and increased unemployment. This has reduced access to food by the poor. This unacceptable situation calls for prompt and effective remedial action. With this football solidarity campaign, the two Organisations have the aim to attract public attention on the fight against hunger and poverty and to improve living conditions for the world’s poorest people. On 6 March 2008, the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Dr. Jacques Diouf, and the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Mr. Issa Hayatou, signed a Cooperation Agreement, in Cairo, Egypt. With this strategy, the two organisations hope to promote humanitarian causes, with the ultimate goal of improving living conditions for the world’s poorest people. Click here for more (Cooperation Agreement) http://www.fao.org/newsroom/en/news/2008/1000807/index.html CAF and FAO, moved by common ideals, engaged in a fruitful partnership in order to successfully collaborate in areas of common interest and illustrate their strong willingness to cooperate for the eradication of world hunger; CAF and FAO wish to forge a strong partnership for the identification, design, implementation and monitoring of decentralized cooperation programmes that can help improve the living conditions of the most disadvantaged populations and assure them development opportunities. The strategic alliance between Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) would include various actions in 2009/2010, among which the following: An advocacy and awareness campaign “African Football against Hunger” starting around World Food Day in October at the African level with targeted football associations in selected African countries. This would involve identifying a common message, developing promotional material, using testimonials from African football stars, FAO Goodwill Ambassadors and others, and organising a press conference to launch the campaign. The “African Football against Hunger” campaign will be activated as well around various events and competitions organized by the Confederation of African Football, including the Orange African Cup of Nations to be held in Angola in January 2010.
