Club Africain holds Mimosas to 1-1 draw
ASEC Mimosas couldn’t do better than a 1-1 draw against Club Africain on Sunday at the Robert Champroux of Marcory Stadium in the first playing day of the group stage of the Orange Confederation Cup.Mimosas can only blame themselves for having missed their chance to earn maximum points at home.
In fact, in the first half, Mangoua Kesse and Koffi Boua and Kone Bakary each had opportunities to enable their team take the lead but they failed to score. The team had to wait till the second half to be compensated for their efforts. In the 62nd minute, Zagabyou Hugues would use a pass from Brefo Mensah to beat the Club African keeper, Ben Ayoub. ASEC Mimosas thought it had gone through the most difficult hurdle but they had to deal with the Tunisian « grinta ». Coach Faouzi Benzarti would make some vital substitutions, replacing Meriah Mehdi with Mouihn Youssef, who would create the opportunity for the equalising goal. After dismissing the Ivorian defence, he would serve Mesaidi Hamed who would do the damage in the 73rd minute. Until the end the Ivorians would not make use of the numerous opportunities created by right out midfielder, Oueidj Mechiri who would later be excluded following a serious foul on Kone Bakary.
In spite of this numerical superiority, ASEC could not take the lead. Neither Dogba Ange Pacome who replaced Bougouhi Jean Jacques at the 70th minute nor Mangoua Kesse would be able to score another goal. . “We got a satisfactory result as we confronted a good ASEC team. We are particularly satisfied with the performance of our newly recruited players, most of who were playing an African competition for the first time,” Lofti Rouissi said at the end of the game. For ASEC coach, French technician Sebastien Desabre, they have to learn lessons from this encounter. “We lacked finishing. If we were focused in the first half, we would not have ended like this,” Desabre regretted.
For the ASEC Mimosas keeper, Yeboah Daniel, nothing is yet lost. “It is the start of the championship and we don’t have to be discouraged. There are other encounters awaiting us and it is for us to stay focused and determined,” the goalkeeper said.
ASEC which lacked the killer punch in this encounter must fight hard in order to reach the semi-final. Roger Ouegnin’s side has to double their efforts in the attack sector because it is the weak point of this team that rather plays well but finds it difficult to score goals. That is why the French technician promises his boys his contribution in the preparation in order to enable them to obtain positive results. “We will work harder to reach a good level. We will focus on the attack. We still have opportunities in this competition. We will play all the matches without neglecting any” Desabre added.
Being the lone Ivorian team in the African competition, ASEC has a challenge to meet. Also, Mimosas more than ever before plans to regain its place among the best African teams, by extending a record that includes a Champions League title and reaching a final.
