The Gambia U-19 team opened their Umbria Football tournament with a 2-0 defeat to Slovenia . The West Africans had gone into the break at 0-0 but could not contain Slovenia who dominated play much longer. Gambian goalkeeper Baboucarr Sanyang was a busy man and made numerous saves to deny Slovenia before Zaja Miha broke the deadlock in the 55th minute.
Gambia responded with some fluid play mainly initiated from midfield by  Hamza Barry and captian Mamut Saine. This improved Gambian play produced some chances for strikers Ali Saine and Saloum Faal but they were either  squandred or  blocked by the Slovenians.
Striker Faal had the best chance to equalise when Slovenia keeper Cotman Aljaz’s attempted clearance fell to him but his effort went over the cross bar. Gambia continued searching for an equaliser and  Head coach Peter Bornu Johnson  brought in Lamin Sarjo Samateh, Musa Bojang and Doudu Sisoho but it was Slovenia who scored again in the  87th minute. Gambia’s next match will be against hosts Italy. In the other Group B game played on Tuesday, Romania beat San Marino 1-0 .
