NEWSCAF mourns Theophile Mbida Abega. 11-17-2012
The Confederation of African Football President Issa Hayatou expressed shock and sadness following the death of Theophile Mbida Abega, the Cameroonian football legend. Mr Abega passed away on November 16th 2012 at the Yaounde General Hospital in Cameroon. President Hayatou sent his condolences to the Cameroon Football Association saying, “On my behalf, the CAF Executive Committee and African football family, I express my condolences to the Cameroon Football Association and to Abega’s family. Our thoughts are with you during this sad moment” said President Issa Hayatou. Theophile Mbida Abega was a great African player; he was captain of the Cameroon team and led the Indomitable Lions to the African title in 1984. He received an African Footballer of the Year award following his performance in Cote d’Ivoire that year. Mr. Abega also played in France for FC Toulouse and in Switzerland. He led Canon Sportif de Yaounde to numerous victories in the Cameroonian national league before becoming President of the club for almost two decades. |
