Hosts Zambia got their campaign in the men’s Under-17 football competition at the Zone VI Games off to the perfect start on Friday with a 2-0 win over Botswana in their Group A clash. Boyd Mkandawire put the home side 1-0 up on 27 minutes, before Chibuye Mulilo added a second a minute before halftime. There were no goals in the second period, but it was a satisfactory start for the home team. In the other game in Group A on Friday, South Africa also made a promising start as they beat Malawi 4-0. Shakes Mahasba’s side led 2-0 at the break and were always in control of the game. Bongani Khanyile gave them a seventh minute lead, before Nhlakanipho Ntuli added a second two minutes before the break. The points were made safe when Ayabulela Magqwaka added a third on 53 minutes, and Ntuli scored his second and South Africa’s fourth midway through the second period.
