12-20-2012

El-Gohary is unarguably one of the most renowned faces in the history of Egyptian and African football. Born on February 20, 1938; he had a short playing career with Ahly, going on to win the Africa Cup of Nations in 1959 on home soil and finishing as topscorer. As coach of Egypt from 1988 to 2002, he guided the team to the 1990 FIFA World Cup after a 56-year absence.

He also steered the Pharaohs’ triumph at the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations, making him the only person to win the title as a player and coach. He also guided Ahly and Zamalek to African Club titles in 1982 and 1993.

El-Gohary also had a successful stint with Jordan from 2002 to 2007. He died on September 3 in Amman, Jordan.
