NEWSCECAFA: All draws in Jinja 01-18-2009
Burundi needed a last minute goal to share the spoils with favourites Zambia in a classic Cecafa senior Challenge Cup match at the Bugembe Stadium in Jinja on Sunday. The match watched by a sparse crowd ended in a 1-1, a major boost for the tiny central African nation that is determined to progress in this ten-team tournament. Zambia who is appearing as guests needed the win to consolidate their position at the top of Group B table but were denied by a last minute goal from Claude Nahimana. The Zambians had taken the lead in the 57th minute when Roger Kola tapped home a Jonas Kakuwaha goal. The Chopolopolo as the Zambians are better known played most of the second half a man less after referee Abdulkadir Hassan from Somalia sent off Kebby Hachipuka in the 72nd minute for rough play on Nahimana. The numerical advantage lifted the Burundi game as they immediately took charge tormenting their opponents. They should have scored within this time but Nahima and Nimubona Emery missed closely. Burundi coach Gilbert 'Yaounde' Kanyenkore was impressed by the fighting spirit in his boys saying they proved that they were up to the tournament's standards. "We are happy to snatch a point from Zambia and it will motivate us in the remaining matches," he said. The Burundi still have matches against Kenya and Sudan. Hevre Renard of Zambia said the draw though slowing their march would not deter their ambition in the tournament whose top prize is US$30,000. Djibouti 1 Sudan 1 Defending champions Sudan dropped vital points when Djibouti forced them to a 1-1 draw in another match at the same venue. Eltahib Elmani scored for the champions in the 17th minutes but the Djibouti refused to be cowed coming close in the 35th minute through Yacin Ali. Daher Ahmed put on a sterling second half show snatching the equalizer in the 50th minute and constantly frustrated the Sudan defence with his runs. As it became clear that a draw was possible, Djibouti went defensive, their players spending quite some time of the ground injured. Their coach Ahmed Menem from Egypt said Sudan played a physical game that was easy for his boys to handle. His Sudanese opposite number Ahmed Babiker said his team played with little discipline especially upfront choosing to lay back and counter attack," he said. |
