One of the pillars of African football dies at 99

Former CAF President, Dr. Abdel Halim Mohamed passed away on Thursday, April 16, in Khartoum, Sudan after a protracted battle with ailment. He was 99.
 
Dr. Halim, a CAF Honorary President was the third president of the Confederation serving between 1968 and 1972.
 
The veteran Sudanese Sports Administrator, famous for his contribution to the development of the game also served as President of the continent’s governing body from 1987 to 1988.
 
CAF President Issa Hayatou has paid glowing tribute to the former CAF President   describing him as a pillar in the revival of football on the continent.
 
“Dr Halim was a great sportsman who devoted all his efforts towards the promotion of the football and sports in general in Africa and the world at large.”
 
The renowned Sudanese Sports Administrator who was also a lifetime member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) spent 50-years in active sports-related activities.
 
In 2003, Dr Halim was presented with the Golden Sports Medal, Sudan’s highest sports laurel by President Omar Al-Bashir, for his distinguished achievement and dedication in sports.
 
He was also the first President of the Sudan Football Association.
 
Dr. Halim was one of the founding members of CAF. He was actively present, part and parcel of those who came up with the idea to create CAF in 1956 in Lisbon, and later in 1957, he organized the 1st CAF General Assembly in Khartoum, Sudan.
