CR Belouizdad won their sixth Algerian Cup title after beating CABB Arreridj 2-1 on penalties last Thursday in this season’s final.

The clash, watched by a packed crowd at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida including Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika failed to produce an outright winner after 120 minutes of action, forcing the game into penalties.

During the shootout, CR Belouizdad confirmed their superiority in the annual competition by converting two of their kicks against one by CABB Arreridj to claim the ultimate after a barren 120 minutes of play.

This year’s final, which will go down as one of the most fiercely contested ever marks the fourth time a winner has been decided through penalties after the 1978, 1988 and 2004 editions.

CABB Arreridj, who were hoping for their maiden success in the annual competition failed in that course.

President Boutefilka presented the newly acquired trophy by the Algeria Football Association (FAF) to the captain of CR Belouizdad, Abdelkrim Maameri amidst cheers and jubilation by the players, technical team and fans of the 2001 Algerian League champions.

The Mohamed Belouizdad-based club, which had earlier won the 1966, 1969, 1970, 1978 and 1995 editions join ES Setif and MC Alger as the only clubs to have won the annual competition six times.

Only USM Alger has won the championship seven times since its inception 45 years ago.
