Former Africa champions, ASEC Mimosas moved a point clear on the Ivorian League standings with a 2-1 victory over old foes Africa Sports in an outstanding week 8 clash on Saturday.

The victory took ASEC’s point haul after eight matches to 17, a point richer than Issia Wazi who slipped to second.

For the Mimosas, the victory at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké against their bitterest rivals, keeps their league title ambitions on track while the latter’s unimpressive run this term continues.

The clash, indisputably the most sought after on the Ivorian football calendar pitted the country’s most successful clubs against each other.

Between the two clubs come 34 Ivorian Premier League titles, with ASEC having won the most – 22 times.

ASEC, whose performances this term has been dubbed a pale shadow of previous’ took the lead after 10 minutes Marc Dion Sédé before Africa Sports who were playing at home replied four minutes from time through Kouassi Kouamé.

Just when all thought the match was heading for a stalemate, Kouakou Iréné struck the match winner a minute from time to land his side the maximum points.

The victory served a sweet revenge for “Mimosas” who were pipped to the premier league title by their local rivals last season in a fashionable manner.

Africa Sports maintain their ninth position with 10 points of a possible 24 from eight games.
