CECAFA Cup in Sudan

The  Council of East and Central Africa Football Association will stage the 2009 Kagame club in Sudan starting June 30. The annual championship has attracted 12 clubs from the region with TP Mazembe of DRC as guests.

The tournament sponsored by El Merreikh group and President of Rwanda HE Paul Kagame to the tune of US 600,000 promises to be a thrilling affair with El Merreikh club of Sudan promising to be the club to watch in the two week festival.

The event kick off Tuesday with two matches in Khartoum pitting Kenya's Mathare United and Djibouti's Kartilleh in the first match followed by an epic showdown between hosts El Mereikh and Atraco of Rwanda.

Groups: A -El Merreikh (Sudan), Atraco (Rwanda), Mathare United(kenya) and Kartilleh(Djibouti)

Group: B -KCC(Uga), Mazembe (DRC), Prisons (Tanzania), Benadir (somalia)

Group:  C- Tusker (Kenya), Inter Stars (Burundi), Miembeni (Zanzibar), Hey Al Arab (Sudan).

Group  A promises to be a three horse race between El Mereikh, Atraco and Mathare. Mathare making their debut are outgoing Kenyan champions based in Africa's largest slum know as Mathare. The club has produced some of the finest players on the continent including striker Denis Oliech who is playing in French serie A with Auxerre. The other prominent figure in the Mathare outfit is Titus Mulama, one of the colourful midfielders in Kenya. The Mathare club is one of the most organised clubs in Kenyan premier league.

El Mereikh are one of the top clubs in Sudan having reached the group stage of the CAF  champions league alongside TP Mazembe. They have Nigerian imports in their line-up. They are poised to clinch the first slot and go all the way to the quarter finals. Atraco led by a galaxy of stars are another formidable side in the championship. Andre Lomami will be their attack strongman, will Alain Gaberuka will be their mainstay in defence.

In Group B, TP Mazembe led by Trevor Mputu will be testing CECAFA's waters for the first time as they compete as guests. The Mazembe club from Lubumbashi are a formidable outfit and having reached the champions league group stage, will use the Kagame Cup to sharpen their claws ahead of the qualifiers which kick off  mid July . Their biggest challenge in this group will be KCC of Uganda. The Kampala club who reached the last 16 of CAF Champions league are a formidable outfit.

In group C, defending champions Tusker of Kenya will have to overcome Hey Al Arab of Sudan and Inter Stars of Burundi. Led by evergreen Oscar Kadenge, scorer of the winning goal for the champions in Tanzania last year, Oscar is the son of the legendary Joe Kadenge. Inter Stars have half of the Burundi national team. The matches will be staged in Khartoum and Port Sudan.
