Kampala City Council (KCC) of Uganda are on the high after an exciting 3-2 victory over TP Mazembe of DRC in their opening Group B of CECAFA/Kagame club cup competition in Khartoum, Sudan Wednesday night. KCC who almost qualified to the group stage of the CAF champions league two months ago would have clinched the match with a huge margin had they utilsised all the chances they created especially after Mazembe were reduced to ten men in the last quarter of the match. In an interview, KCC top striker Tommy Okello told CAF online" We are not taking chances. We had to beat Mazembe to silence them. They had been talking alot since they arrived here." And their dashing winger Antony Bongole said they had missed the CAF group stage through errors against Merreikh in May and they were in Khartoum this time to recapture the regional title they last won in 1978. "Yes, we want that Kagame cup and we are detremined to get especially after demonstrating high disciplined game against Mazembe," he said. Team leader of Mazembe Fredereick Kitenge conceded defeat saying:" Well it was a balanced game and it could have gone either way. But we are not finished. We are still in the race." Mazembe suffered a second half set-back when goalkeeper Robert Kidiaba was sent off for a rough charge on Ugandan player and the set-back had a huge bearing on their balance as the KCC side took advantage to press forward relentlessly. Now Mazembe will have to beat Tanzania Prisons and Somalia Benadir Telecom to be sure of advancing. In Port Sudan on Friday, defending champions Tusker of Kenya take on surprise package Miembeni of Zanzibar in their second group C Match. Miembeni top the group after a thrilling 2-1 win over Inter Stars of Burundi. Home team Hay al Arab will face Inter Stars in the second Group C match later in the night. |
