The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) held a press conference, on October 12th 2009, at the premises of FAO/RNE in Cairo, Egypt to kick start the solidarity and public relation campaign under the theme “African Football Against Hunger”.
The press conference was chaired by FAO-Representative to Egypt and FAO/RNE Officer-in-Charge Mr. Abdessalam OuldAhmed, TeleFood Coordinator for the Near East and North Africa at FAO/Rome Mr. Ismail AbouZid and CAF Deputy General Secretary Mr. Hicham El Amrani.
This campaign consolidates the partnership between the two organizations following the cooperation agreement signed in 2008, and provides further opportunities to implement joint projects to raise awareness on hunger in Africa, a scourge that hits today more than 1 020 million people worldwide.
Mr. Ismail AbouZid said: “Both organizations will promote a series of joint initiatives, involving affiliated members, professional football players and selected CAF events to reach the public opinion and encourage fund raising within the context of TeleFood campaign and the World Food Day to be held on October 16th 2009”.
FAO will participate in the CAF medical congress in Rwanda, from December 7th – 10th 2009, where the most prominent medical specialists in football gather to present the latest medical research in relation to the preparation of teams, players, and prevention of injuries, diseases and malnutrition.
Other activities will take place in 2010 and will be announced in due time via our official channels. CAF has created a dedicated Social Responsibility section on its official website, www.cafonline.com, including all information and communication on this campaign.
CAF Deputy General Secretary, Mr. El Amrani stated that: “CAF has always been involved with organizations of the United Nations to promote peace, solidarity and unity, and The African Football Against Hunger campaign is another step in this direction. It is only legitimate that we partner up with FAO to improve the lives of our African fellow-citizens”.
