New comers Sofapaka win Kenya League title Sofapaka Football Club has rewritten history in Kenyan football to become the first team to win the Premier league title the same year they gained entry. The new comers beat Red Berets 3-0 on Saturday evening at the Afraha stadium in the town of Nakuru to win the title with yet another round of matches to be played the following weekend. Their leading marksman John Baraza netted a brace, while Robson Dondo scored the third goal to leave the 2008 champions Mathare United with no chance of playing catch-up. Club President Elly Kalekwa was full of praise for his team that had done a great job through out the season. “Many people thought we were a weak team. They can now prove that hard work pays,” said the wealthy Congolese businessman. Mathare United who won the title last season will be all out to try and get second spot so that they qualify to represent Kenya in the CAF Confederations Cup next year. Barnes applies to coach Rwanda After failing miserably in their attempt to qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, Rwanda have intensified a search for a foreign coach to handle their national side Amavubi. On the list of applicants is former Liverpool and England star John Barnes and seven other coaches who the FA have refused to disclose. . The former Liverpool midfielder John Barnes reportedly is anxious to manage an African national team. Barnes’ agent Winston Clarke said his client is eagerly waiting for the outcome of the job because he feels managing a national side will give him better opportunities to improve his coaching career. The former Liverpool hit-man is desperate to re-launch his coaching career after being sacked by Tranmere Rovers last month. The 45-year-old was fired along with his assistant manager Jason McAteer after a wretched start to their League One campaign. More recently, he was in the spotlight over bankruptcy but he rubbished those reports. Ferroviário de Maputo have retained their Mozambique league title. The Maputo side amassed an unassailable 51 points after drawing 1-1 at home against Desportivo de Maputo at Macahava Stadium in Maputo on Sunday in the final round of 26 league games. Meanwhile, Desportivo finished runners-up three points behind the 2009 champions on 48 points. Ferroviario's win will see them represent Mozambique in next year’s Orange Champions League.
