NEWSWAFU introduces “Best of the Best” award 03-07-2010
The West Africa Football Union (WAFU) has decided to set up an award to honour the best player in the sub-region. The award is tagged “Best of the Best” and will be presented to any player from West Africa who performs exceptionally during the year under review. Unlike other awards, neither coaches nor journalists will be involved in the selection process, rather the public will vote for their choice by phone or SMS. The maiden winner of "The best of the best" will be unveiled at a ceremony later in May. Meanwhile, the organizers have announced 16 players as the contenders for the award. The list includes three Ivorians - Kader Keita, Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba, three Ghanaians - Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and Andre Ayew, two Nigerians – Yakubu Ayiegbeni and John Obi Mikel, Jonathan Pitroipa and Moumouni Dagano – Burkina Faso and Malian duo; Frederic Kanoute and Seydou Keita. The rest are Stephane Sessegnon – Benin, Emmanuel Adebayor – Togo, Mamadou Niang – Senegal and Pascal Feindouno – Guinea. Four of the 16 players will be selected for the final phase of nomination process. At a press conference in Abidjan on Friday, March 5, Secretary-General of WAFU, Aka Malan also outlined the zonal union’s calendar for the year. * April 8-18 in Abeokuta (Nigeria) - WAFU Cup of Nations. The draw will take place on March 30. Eight countries have already confirmed their participation. Teams will be allowed to field five foreign-based players playing other parts of Africa and the rest of the world. * May 9 to November 7 – The qualify series for the 25th edition of the WAFU Club Cup, whilst finals (four teams) will be held from December 9 -12 in Lome Togo. * August 5-15 in Bamako (Mali) – Women’s Cup of Nation. Competing teams are Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Gambia and a guest team from CECAFA, Tanzania *7-17 October in Burkina Faso - 6th of the WAFDU U-17 Cup with eight participating teams. The Secretary-General of WAFU also confirmed that the General Assembly Special of WAFU will be held in Abeokuta (Ogun State), Nigeria on Saturday, April 17. |
