In the next few hours, the king of African football for the Year 2009 will be crowned. Ghana’s Michael Essien, Didier Drogba of Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o Fils are the contenders for the ‘royal’ crown of African Footballer of the Year.
The date is Thursday, March 11 and the venue for the coronation is the Banquet Hall, State House in the Ghanaian capital.
With few hours to the ceremony, the venue for the event has seen a massive conditioning as part of preparations for the Awards Gala. Built by Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah in the early 1960’s, the Banquet Hall is unarguably the most ideal venue to stage one of the biggest events on the African football calendar.
True Colour Events, the South African organizing firm have been in town and are working feverishly to get the venue ready for the event.
A visit by cafonline.com to the Banquet Hall on Tuesday revealed that the venue has been painted in the green and white colours of sponsors, Globacom. Banners and fliers of the cellular outfit are the commonest items on sight at the venue which can accommodate about 800 persons.
The beautifully designed stage has been set with a seating that reflects the symbol of the sponsors backed by state of the art sound and video equipment geared towards putting a memorable event.
Like previous events, the organizers have promised an event with rich cultural display, acrobatic and musical rendition that will last in the minds of all.
“We are on course and will put up an event that will meet up the expectation of the guests. African should expect a great show as we seek to celebrate African football,” said Bobby Scott, Chief Executive of True Colours Events.
As the artistes and gymnasts rehearsed ahead of the grand event, the same can be said of MC’s Thomas Mhlambo and Christopher Bongo as they finalized their lines. Also, an array of globally acclaimed artistes are billed to perform at the event. Amongst them are P-Square from Nigeria, Ishmael Lo of Senegal and Ghanaian duo, Sherifatu Gunu and Kwabena Kwabena.
Meanwhile, the event will be beamed to millions across the globe with likes of Ghana Television (GTV), SuperSport (South Africa), NTA (Nigeria), ORBT (Benin) and RTS (Senegal) among others beaming it live.
This is the second time the annual awards will be staged in Ghana after 2007.
