South Sudan’s Lasu relishing COSAFA Women’s Championship Challenge

South Sudan’s captain Amy Lasu Lauya Lasu has said she is looking forward to playing in the 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship.

Lasu, South Sudan’s female MVP, told CAFOnline.com that playing at the COSAFA Women’s Championship is a good step for the team and the players because they will have a lot to learn as they rub shoulders with more experienced players.

Twelve teams will battle in the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) organized competition slated for September 28th to October 9th at the Nelson Mandela Bay, Port Elizabeth.

“As a player you only get better when you face several challenges and continue playing in different tournaments. This is a very good opportunity for us to gauge ourselves against other teams. We are hungry to go and learn,” added the skipper.

Lasu said they only started the women’s Premier League in South Sudan this year and exposure remains a big challenge for many of them. “We played in the 2019 CECAFA Women’s Challenge Cup in Tanzania, had two international friendly matches against Ethiopia and also some of the players featured for Yei Joint Stars FC at the recent qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League,” explained Lasu.

Lasu says having Shilene Margaret Booysen from South Africa as the head coach is also helping them because she is very experienced. “She is working hard to make us better players,” added Lasu.

South Sudan will open their campaign against Botswana at the Isaac Wolfson on September 29th, before they take on Zimbabwe on October 2nd. They will wind up the group stage with a game against Tanzania on October 4th. In case they go past the group stage they will have two more games to play.
