Uganda pumped up for tough South Africa showdown

Uganda are aiming for a maiden appearance in the fourth round of the African qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup when they file out against South Africa in Johannesburg on Friday, December 17, 2021.

The Cranes landed in South Africa for the second leg battle on Wednesday, holding a slim 1-0 first leg lead over the South Africans courtesy of Hadijah Nandago's first half strike in Entebbe two weeks ago.

The first meeting triumph gave the East Africans a huge confidence boost ahead of the reserve fixture with Basetsana and Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi has backed his lads to complete a double over their hosts.

“We've had our last training on the pitch we are going to have the match tomorrow [Friday]," Kiyingi told CAFOnline.com.

"The playing ground is okay. We cannot tell the condition of the weather tomorrow but I know for sure that we are going to win."

To reach the third round, the 2021 CECAFA Women’s U20 Championship runners-up trounced Kenya 10-3 on aggregate, with Cyprus' Apollon Limassol loanee Juliet Nalukenge, grabbing three of those goals for the Ugandans.

Kiyingi has a full complement of players at his disposal, including Nalukenge, who joins from Cyprus and he believes his 20-player squad will ground out a win against their COSAFA opponents.

"I think these are the best players we have selected to go and do the job. I have the belief that the squad selected is competent to help us secure the result we want,” said Kiyingi.

“We carry a 1-0 advantage into the second leg but that doesn’t mean we shall go and sit back. We want to go and win in South Africa."

At Dobsonville Stadium, the Ugandans are boosted by the presence of former Cranes captain Denis Onyango following the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper's visit to the team's training on Thursday.

With a narrow first leg lead, Uganda must avoid a defeat in South Africa to seal their progression to the next round of the African qualifiers.
