Last season runner ups RS Berkane of Morocco rose to top Group B of the 2019-20 Total CAF Confederation Cup, defeating visitors ESAE of Benin 3-0 at the Stade Municipal de Berkane on Sunday evening, to start their mini league stage campaign in style.
The Oranges dominated the game and were the better side from the kickoff till the end. They scored twice in the opening half through Zaid Krouch and Hamdi Laachir, and substitute Djibril Ouattara added a third four minutes from time, to raise their tally to three points, two more than DR Congo’s Motema Pembe and Zambia’s Zanaco who played for a 1-1 draw earlier on the day in Kinshasa. ESAE follow in that order pointless.
Berkane raided numerous attacks on their visitors’ defense and goalkeeper, but had to wait till the 25th minute to take the lead. Burkinabe inspiration Alain Traore found Krouch who sent a scorcher from inside the box to break the deadlock for Berkane.
Seven minutes later Traore once again was the man behind the second goal, when he rounded his marker and sent a cross that Laachir tapped easily from close range, as the hosts went to the break 2-0 up.
Traore could have scored himself six minutes into the second half and in a spectacular fashion, when he met Krouch cross with a flying bicycle kick but his ball went just wide.
And four minutes from time substitute Djibril Ouattara who was on pitch for just a minute added Berkane's third goal of the night. Mohamed Aziz sent a cross that Ouattara tapped easily from close range to put the cherry on top of the cake.
In match day 2 Berkane will fly to face Zanaco in Lusaka, while ESAE entertains DC Motema Pembe next Sunday.
