Nigeria’s Enyimba and Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien made a victorious start to the 2020-2021 Total CAF Confederation Cup group stage on Wednesday, both winning at home against Libya’s Ahli Benghazi and Burkina Faso’s Salitas respectively.
Enyimba 2-1 Ahli Benghazi
The Group A match day 1 kicked off in a hot Enyimba International Stadium in Aba. Winners of the CAF Champions League in 2003 and 2004 Enyimba started the game and the mini league stage on a high, as they want to write a new page in their history.
In the 9th minute, Austin Olapado Tunde sent a left-footed shot that found the net of Ahli Benghazi to give The People’s Elephant their opening goal.
Less than ten minutes later, the visitors restored parity from the spot after a foul by Nigerian midfielder Omaka Chukwudi on Abdalla Mohamed. Mohamed took the penalty himself to make it 1-1.
Two minutes before the break, the Nigeriens regained advantage thanks to Victor Mbaoma, who scored following a rebound freekick.
The other Group A match sees ES Setif (Algeria) taking on Orlando Pirates (South Africa) in Accra, Ghana.
CS Sfaxien 1-0 Salitas
At Stade Taib Mhiri in Sfax, Tunisia, CS Sfaxien fought for a narrow victory at home over Burkinabe side Salitas.
Aymen Harzi’s scored the game’s lone from the penalty spot, as the record three time CAF Confederation Cup winners started their campaign with maximum points.
The other Group C match will pit Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia) against ASC Jaraaf (Senegal).
