Paradou goalkeeper Toufik Moussaoui made a crucial second half penalty save as Algerian youngsters Paradou clinched a point on the road against Ivory Coast side FC San Pedro as they played to a 0-0 draw in their Total CAF Confederations Cup Group D opener in Abidjan on Sunday.
The home side which had the biggest chunk of scoring chances won a penalty in the 50th minute after Adem Zorgane handled inside the box, but Gabriel Alessa’s effort from 12 the spot was well saved by the shot stopper.
Despite the home side bossing possession, Paradou had good chances. Early on, Abdelkader Ghorab saw his effort come off the crossbar after a good run into the box while on the other end, keeper Moussaoui made a great save to deny Koffi Gueyet from point blank.
Ghorab had another great chance for Paradou in the 19th minute when he ran onto a ball planted behind the defense, but he failed to beat the San Pedro keeper one on one as his low shot to the left corner was parried away.
On the half hour mark, Pedro showed some attacking spine to complement their possession when Cheick Soumaro dribbled his way into the box from the left, but his final cross couldn’t land on a teammate’s body.
In the second half Ghorib had another chance after some good link up play, but once again he could not beat the keeper one on one. San Pedro came close two minutes later when Soumaro struck a brilliant freekick from 20 yards out but it came off the bar.
The home side would have the chance of going into the lead from the penalty but it was not used. They were almost punished immediately but had their keeper Ira Eliezer to thank after he made a good save to deny Ghiles Gueanoui’s shot from range.
With the penalty heartache still messing them up, San Pedro pushed in the attacking end, but Paradou defended with a lot of discipline.
