Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier - Mozambique - Cote d'Ivoire

Mozambique and Ivory Coast played out to a 0-0 draw as the two sides got off their journey towards the FIFA World Cup, Qatar 2022 with a point each in Match Day one of Group D on Friday.

The Ivorians under the tutelage of Patrick Baumelle, who are keen on a ticket to Qatar after missing out on the 2018 showpiece in Russia arrived at the Estadio Nacional de Zimpeto with a keen eye for victory, but left with a point that might perhaps push them to do better in the next match.

They had few chances and far in between, Max Gradel and Sebastian Haller both coming close, but not close enough to change the scoreline. Mozambican goalkeeper Ernan was always at hand to deal with all the threats posed by Les Elephants.

Towards the end of the tie, the Ivorians had a chance to steal off a 1-0 victory but Franck Boli’s connection off a cross on the right went inches wide.

Meanwhile, coach Hugo Broos’s first assignment with South Africa ended in a stalemate as the Bafana Bafana were held to another goalless draw by Zimbabwe’s Brave Warriors.

Just as the Ivory Coast game, chances were few and far in between. Thabani Kamusoko, Tino Kadewere and Khama Billiat all had efforts at goal, but none could trouble Ronwen Williams in the South African goal.

The group is however expected to blow open when South Africa clashes with Ghana on Match Day Two while Zimbabwe takes on Ethiopia in the other Group G match.
