Two years ago, Krepin Diatta was a part of the Senegal team that took part in the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Zambia.
He was a key player of ‘Les Lionceaux' that reached the 2017 edition of the youth showpiece final before losing to hosts Zambia 2-0 in the final. Diatta scored two goals in the process and was one of the tournament revelations. He went on to participate in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea where Senegal reached the round of 16 before bowing to Mexico.
Two years later, Less than two years later, Diatta received his debut call for The Teranga Lions last March. Coach Aliou Cisse believes the 20-year old can do his magic with the senior side as he did with 'Les Lionceaux'. And Diatta has proved him right.
During Senegal’s first game of their 2019 Total AFCON campaign against Tanzania, Diatta scored a contender of the goal of the strike. After a corner kick, the ball fell to Diatta whose first-time shot from 25-yards was too much for Tanzania’s goalkeeper Aishi Manula to handle. His first goal in Teranga Lions shirt, and one he will never forget definitely. He went on to win the “Total Man of the Match” award on the day.
Diatta plies his trade in Belgium with Club Brugge. After his eye capturing performances in the 2017 U-20 AFCON, he joined Norwegian side Sarpsborg, before joining Brugge in January 2018. He has already won two titles with the Belgian giants.
With his coach Cisse one of Senegal’s golden class of 2002, Diatta hopes to go one step further than the captain that lost the 2002 AFCON final on penalties to Cameroon. His heroics in the group stage captured the fans’ eyes, and he will be looking forward for much more as the 2019 Total AFCON enters its decisive stages.
