On Sunday 17 January 2021, “Chico Ushindi Wa Kabanza” entered the history of African football, and that of football in Cameroon in particular, issuing his name as the author of the first official goal at the imperial Japoma Stadium in Douala.
The TP Mazembe striker goal did not only give DR Congo victory over neighbors Congo in Total African Nations Championship, Cameroon 2020 Group B match, but also secured Ushindi a name in Cameroonian football history books.
CAFOnline.com met with the 25 years old striker.
CAFOnline: Did you know that your goal against Congo was the first ever goal at Japoma stadium?
Ushindi: I'm very happy with this. It was after the game that I was informed about that. It is a pleasure for me to enter the history of this stadium and that of Cameroonian football.
You weren't supposed to start in this game, but a succession of events brought you here.
Well, when you are selected for the national team, you have to be always ready at all times. Our coach has always said that he can use all the players in the squad. They are all important for all games. I was always ready. I was hurt and didn't practice a lot, but I was ready for the games.
How do you see this CHAN?
The tournament is good and that's another experience. It makes me feel good because the level is very high.
Are the slightly drastic COVID-19 conditions a hindrance to the development of your group?
Well, we always protect ourselves because if we don't, we can find ourselves in the same situation as our five players who tested positive. We protect ourselves to be always present at all matches.
What are your personal goals in this competition?
My wish is to win the cup and thus have to work and win games. We have to work well in all matches.
What dreams do you have for your career?
I have ambitions to join teams in Europe or some big clubs in Africa. This is my goal. After we finish this CHAN, God willing, if there are teams that sign me that will be good.
