Algeria’s CR Belouizdad clinched the remaining Total CAF Champions League Group B quarter final qualification slot after beating Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 on Friday to move to nine points.
The other qualification hopeful from the group Al Hilal of Sudan fell short after losing 2-1 to TP Mazembe who finished off the group phase with a motivating win after failing to get into the quarters.
In Tshwane, on-form Amir Sayoud and Ahmed Gasmi scored the goals as Belouizdad won away from home to continue their resurgence after a slow start to the group phase.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 29th minute after capitalizing on an error from keeper Ricardo Goss. The shot stopper who had a stellar game in his competition debut last week tried to pass out the ball through the middle before Sayoud intercepted, rounded him and shot into the net.
Belouizdad kept their front foot on knowing only too well a win would guarantee them a place in the last eight regardless of the result Hilal pick away to Mazembe.
They doubled their lead in the 44th minute when Gasmi glanced a header past the keeper after rising to meet a decent Zine Boulekhoua delivery from the right. It was a gift for Gasmi who had a header fly inches wide at the beginning of the game.
Elsewhere in Lubumbashi, Mazembe signed off from the competition with a win at home. Eid Mugadam had given Hilal a dream start after scoring two minutes into the game and a real belief that they could challenge for a place in the quarters.
However, Mazembe drew level in the 18th minute when Hilal defender Mohamed Ouatara had the ball in his own net. They sealed the win 14 minutes from time when Isaac Tshibangu headed home inside the box.
